United and JetBlue have round-trip flights from New York/Newark (EWR/JFK) to Puerto Vallarta (PVR) for $308-$324, NONSTOP. Flights May to September. Weekends available. Origin/Destination reversible.

JetBlue’s “Basic” fares only allow a small personal item (17 x 13 x 8 inches), like a Jansport SuperBreak backpack without a fee. A regular sized carry-on bag will incur a bag fee. To avoid bag fees, consider using the JetBlue Plus credit-card for the free checked-bag perk.

United’s “Basic Economy” fares do not allow for a free carry-on bag. Only a personal item (like a small laptop bag) is free. Seats are randomly assigned for free prior to boarding. If you have the United Explorer credit-card, use the “free checked bag” perk.

The personal item size on United is smaller (9 x 10 x 17 inches) than Frontier or Spirit (8 x 13 x 18 inches).

Booking a Flight+Hotel together as a package will usually be cheaper than booking each one separately. You can easily construct your own package deals on Expedia, Travelocity, and Priceline. The savings amount will vary depending on the combination of website, flight, and hotel, so be sure to compare the checkout prices on each site before purchase.

Tripadvisor has a color-coded date calendar, red when the average hotel price for that day is more expensive, green for less expensive.   • Tips: Different booking websites will often have differing routes, prices, and availability. Before you finalize your purchase, do a quick check on BookingBuddy, Skyscanner, and Kayak to see if any other site or airline is offering a better deal.
